Then I found out that it was quite popular in various¨ industrial equipment, and wondered -- if it's so good, why isn't¨ it used for passenger cars? The only answers I can come up with¨ are inertia, ignorance, and greed. It's a short-term -- 20 years or so -- solution. I'm not¨ dismissing arguments regarding automobiles and their destructive¨ nature; I merely attempt to address what you \& I can do, by¨ ourselves for ourselves, today. Positive aspects of the automobile-as-transport-device aspects¨ are often overlooked; long-distance ``road trips'' are an¨ intrinsic part of our various and peculiar North American¨ cultures and one I will not give up willingly. Each of my 8000+¨ mile road trips have been powerful and enlightening things, and¨ now I don't have to pee in the environmental pool to do them. In urban areas cars are ridiculuous, and if cities would stop¨ relying on them as income sources (tickets, parking fines, etc;¨ you'd be shocked how much income your city derives from cars) and¨ built usable intra-urban transport systems, and at the state¨ level (I only say this because I can't imagine municipalities¨ working together cooperatively) there were usable inter-urban¨ systems, I think things would be very different. \smallskip \centerline{* * * * *} This book has many problems. It's too skimpy on content, and¨ needs to be a textbook. It needs LPG component and supplier data.¨ I totally forgot fuel mileage (it's 10\% less MPG than gasoline).¨ But I had to make the project reasonable, and cut it off at this¨ point to get it done at all. I'll consider myself lucky if I get¨ complaints that it wasn't enough information to complete the job¨ (by assuming it {\it was} enough to get started). \smallskip \centerline{* * * * *} This book was typeset using \TeX, Donald Knuth's gargantuan¨ public domain mathematical typesetting system, on a DOS 386¨ computer and DeskJet 500 printer, on 60 lb. matte coated paper,¨ hand pasted onto 8.5 $\times$ 11 paper to make copy masters.¨ Photos were taken on the usual lousy pocket camera, ``screened''¨ using the FINE PHOTO setting on a Canon Laser Copier, then cut¨ and glue-sticked into place. Books are xeroxed and hand stapled. } \newpage \headline={\hfil} \centerline{\bf The Fido/FidoNet\trademark\ Bulletin Board System¨ Software} \tenpointsanserif Fido/FidoNet is a software package for DOS based Personal¨ Computers that contains a complete Bulletin Board System (BBS)¨ plus a fully automatic Electronic Mail system. Fido is the best-known Bulletin Board system in the world because¨ of its flexibility, reliability, and features; FidoNet is the¨ software that defined the FidoNet protocol now in use around the¨ planet. The worlds largest privately-owned computer network¨ (10,000 nodes, April 1991) is based upon the FidoNet¨ communications protocol. \bar \begindoublecolumns Fido\trademark\ Bulletin Board System: {\parskip=0pt\parindent=12pt\obeylines \item{\blob}Absolute security \item{\blob}Caller access controls \item{\blob}Language/graphical interfaces \item{\blob}200 message \& file areas \item{\blob}Email and message commands \item{\blob}Error-free down/uploads } Fido is a full\dash featured Computer Bulletin Board System.¨ Callers, commands, message and file areas can all have separate¨ privilege levels and Locks \& Keys applied to them; these let you¨ limit callers' access to any part of the Fido system to fit your¨ needs. \goodbreak FidoNet\trademark\ Network: {\parskip=0pt\parindent=12pt\obeylines \item{\blob}Wide Area Networking \item{\blob}Completely automatic \item{\blob}Error-free transfers \item{\blob}Time-of-day scheduling \item{\blob}Auto message routing } FidoNet is an automatic ``store\dash and\dash forward'' mail¨ system that transfers mail and files with all other FidoNet-comatible systems.
