workshops and meetings so, you thought you had too many workshops to choose from at last year's gathering in toronto? well, this year we've got 100 workshops for you, plus 16 network meetings, plus 9 event planning sessions, plus who-knows- how-many spontaneously-planned events. with 14 time slots for things to happen in, that's an average of at least 9 events going on at any one time. we hope you'll find some interesting ones to learn, share ideas, meet new folks, and have fun in. workshops are grouped into 9 themes. as decided upon at the january planning meeting in philadelphia, anti-sexism workshops are all on friday, anti-racism workshops are all on saturday, and the network meetings are all on monday. each of the remaining themes, anarchy/theory, current events, environment/civilization, ourselves, skills, and workers' struggles, are scheduled throughout the week in such a way that a workshop on a given theme rarely occurs at the same time as another workshop on that same theme. this allows someone who is particularly interested in environment/civilization, for example, to participate in every workshop on that theme, if s/he desires. most workshops last for 2 hours, unless the title is followed by a time. in most cases, however, rooms have been assigned such that each workshop can last for 4 hours before another workshop happens in that room. in any case, participants who want to continue the workshop for longer than the room is available can find an empty room in which to continue. the titles of some workshops are followed by indications such as "wimmin only", "men only", and "men of color only". these are made at the request of the person/s convening the workshop in order to assure safe space for the workshop participants, and we ask you to please respect these requests. if you have a problem with this, please bring it up at a general assembly or with the convener/s, and not at the workshop itself. for gathering-goers who want to find out more about what anarchy and anarchism is, each day features a workshop which serves as an introduction to @. look for "anarchy 101", [???joey's], "what is anarchism", [???monday?], and "@ for beginners". each day begins with a general assembly, which is a time for the entire gathering to meet and share announcements, suggestions, complaints, requests, ideas, reactions, and whatever comes up. except for thursday, when no brunch is served and the opening assembly lasts two hours, the assemblies go from 11:00 to 12:00, overlapping with brunch by 1 hour. gathering affinity groups will meet each day in berkman hall after the general assembly. g.a.g.'s are an opportunity for folks to come together once a day to share their gathering experiences with one another in an ongoing way. groups will be formed with 10-15 people each, possibly of people who did not know each other previously, who would meet every day and would get to know one another and work on things together. groups will be formed throughout the course of the gathering, and are a good way for people who arrive at the gathering without knowing anyone to hook up with folks. the workshops listed in the following pages are those which were submitted by the time this guide went to press. throughout the gathering, rooms 202 and 302 will be available for additional workshops. please reserve a room and time on the "free space use" board. a handful of events will happen at places other than horace mann. look at the bottom of each day's schedule for information on the times and places of these. in addition to the workshops, a number of event planning sessions will be held to plan and prepare for events that will happen later in the gathering. these sessions are described on page ??. the time and place for them will be announced at the general assemblies and will be posted on the "events" board. attention workshop conveners: 1. if you sent in a proposal form for a workshop listed in the following pages but you are no longer able or interested in having it, please, please, let us know so that we can make other arrangements for the space and time. 2. if you are having or want to have a workshop that requires special equipment (vcr, slide projector, etc.), please let us know so that we can make sure your needs are accommodated.
