\input booklet \pageno=17 \footline={\hfill\folio\hfill} \advance\baselineskip-.4pt \advance\parskip-.9pt \centerline{\hl Workshops and Meetings} so, you thought you had too many workshops to choose from at last¨ year's gathering in toronto? well, this year we've got 113¨ workshops for you, plus 16 network meetings, plus 9 event¨ planning sessions, plus who-knows-how-many spontaneously-planned¨ events. with 14 time slots for things to happen in, that's an¨ average of at least 9 events going on at any one time. we hope¨ you'll find some interesting ones to learn, share ideas, meet new¨ folks, and have fun in. each day begins with a general assembly, which is a time for us¨ all to be together to meet and share announcements, suggestions,¨ complaints, requests, ideas, reactions, and whatever comes up.¨ except for thursday, when no brunch is served and the opening¨ assembly lasts 2 hours, the assemblies go from 11:00 to 12:00,¨ overlapping with brunch by 1 hour. gathering affinity groups (g.a.g.'s) will meet each day in edward¨ carpenter hall after the general assembly. g.a.g.'s are formed of¨ 10 - 15 people each, and provide an opportunity for folks to come¨ together to meet and share their gathering experiences with one¨ another in an ongoing way. groups will be formed throughout the¨ course of the gathering, and are a way for people who arrive at¨ the gathering not knowing anyone to hook up with folks. workshops are grouped into 9 themes. as decided upon at the¨ january planning meeting in philadelphia, anti-sexism workshops¨ are all on friday, anti-racism workshops are all on saturday, and¨ the network meetings are all on monday. each of the remaining¨ themes, anarchy/theory, current events, environment/civilization,¨ ourselves, skills, and workers' struggles, are scheduled¨ throughout the week in such a way that a workshop on a given¨ theme rarely occurs at the same time as another workshop on that¨ same theme. this allows someone who is particularly interested in¨ environment/civilization, for example, to participate in every¨ workshop on that theme, if s/he desires. in the following pages, there is a daily workshop schedule¨ followed by workshop descriptions. if you read a description and¨ want to find out when and where the workshop happens, note the id¨ \# at the end of the description, and look for that id \# in the¨ schedule table. for the handful of workshops that happen at¨ places other than horace mann school, the times and places of¨ those workshops are listed in their descriptions. most workshops last for 2 hours, unless the title is followed by¨ a time. in most cases, however, rooms have been assigned so that¨ each workshop can last for 4 hours before another workshop¨ happens in that room. in any case, participants who want to¨ continue a workshop for longer than the room is available can¨ find an empty room in which to continue by checking with the¨ registration table. also, most workshops are scheduled in rooms which hold 30 - 40¨ people each. if more people show up than can fit in the room,¨ check at the registration table for an available larger room or¨ for an additional room if people want to break into smaller¨ groups. in the descriptions which follow, the titles of some workshops¨ are followed by indications such as ``wimmin only'' or ``men¨ only''. these are made at the request of the person/s convening¨ the workshop in order to assure safe space for the workshop¨ participants, and we ask you to please respect these requests. if¨ you have a problem with this, please bring it up at a general¨ assembly or with the conveners, and not at the workshop itself. for gathering-goers who want to find out more about what anarchy¨ and anarchism is, each of four days features a workshop which¨ serves as an introduction to \circleA. look for ``anarchy 101'',¨ ``the essential ideas of anarchism'', ``what is anarchism'', and¨ ``\circleA\ for beginners''. the workshops listed in the following pages are those which were¨ submitted by the time this guide went to press. throughout the¨ gathering, rooms 202 and 302 will be available for additional¨ workshops. if you'd like to convene a workshop, please reserve a¨ room and time at the registration table, then post a notice of it¨ on the ``events'' board. \vskip\parskip \lline{\bf attention workshop conveners:} {\parindent=10pt \item{1.}if you are the person who sent in the proposal form for¨ a workshop listed in the following pages, please, please, stop by¨ the registration table and verify that you are still planning on¨ convening it. if you are not, we would like to be able to use¨ that time and space for another workshop. \item{2.}if you are convening or want to convene a workshop that¨ requires special equipment (vcr, slide projector, etc.), please¨ let us know so that we can make sure your needs are accommodated. } \line{\hfil -- the scheduling committee} \bye
